uh. Pre Christmas Coundown to the New Year.
The arrival of the new year really means only one thing to me–Coachella finally announces it’s initial lineup usually in early Jan. Rumors are flying, there are acts already confirmed and announced for other fests…but once january hits, things really get rolling.
Before we know it, summer music festival season will be upon us. Soon we’ll be full from stuffing ourselves with in-n-out burgers on the way to the polo fields, then we’ll be dirty, we’ll be sweaty, we’ll be wanting to stay hydrated, but not so much so that we’ll have to venture over to the port-o-john farm, some of us will be so old that we just want a place to fucking sit for a while, and others will be wondering if we can actually make it through to the third day. Each day we’ll venture onto the grounds a little later than the last, and by the end of the last act on the last day, we’ll vow to return, to suffer through the physical discomfort because, we’ll insist, it’s worth it for the music. Well…we’ll see. I personally go only for the fantastic douchebag watching. It’s better that strolling down orchard at 2am any given saturday early morn.
So as Coachella kicks off the summer music festival season each year, here are the big guys (with a couple of little ones–and no not all of them–thrown in for a healthy east coast bias).
sxsw-March 7-16, 2008 (debatably the soft kick off for its dual focus of music and film)
Coachella-April 25-27, 2008
Sasquatch-May 24-25, 2008
Bonnaroo-June 12-15, 2008
Siren Fest–? (in 2007 July 21)-drew record numbers last year…but will no doubt lose much of its charm if astroland does indeed close its doors.
Lollapalooza-August 1-3, 2008
Virgin Festival (Baltimore)-?-(in 2007 same weekend as lolla–let’s hope that doesn’t happen again in ’08)–an ’08 date was announce for Calgary, but no word on other shows.
Vineland-August 8-10, 2008 (ushers in its first year in dirty jerz)
Bumbershoot-August 30-September 1, 2008
Austin City Limits-September 26-28, 2008
CMJ-October 21-25, 2008
vegoose-(always seem to forget about vegoose)
(also in the NYC area-Summer Stage, River to River, and unrelated, but me likes, presented by carnegie hall and the new york philharmonic– ‘the best of all possible worlds‘ celebrating the 90th anniversary of leonard berstein’s birth etc…see the article in playbill.)
